Forces & Mechanics

Background

MCAT Physics > Forces and Mechanics

Force (F) is a vector quantity that is experienced by pushing or pulling on objects.

ΣF = Σma

Four Main Forces

MCAT Forces and Mechanics - Force, Mass and Velocity

Mass (m) is a scalar that measures of bodies amount of stuff. Independent of gravity

Gravity (Fg) is the attractive force felt by all forms of matter (-10 m/s2)

Weight (W) is a vector that measures the gravitational force acting on a mass on Earth

W = Fg = mg

Acceleration (a) measures the rate of change of velocity as a result of applied force

a = F/m
